Well, when an oil spill occurs, there are many ways to clean it up. Methods include: mechanical means to contain and recover the oil, and chemical means to disperse or clean it. These methods can be used separately or together to help clean up spills quickly and avoid getting oil on the shoreline. Should the oil make it to the shoreline, physical methods would have to be used to clean the oil from wildlife, beaches, or anything else it touches.
Some of those mechanical methods are sorbents, skimmers and booms. They all help to pool the oil and stop it from making an even bigger mess. Chemicals include stuff like dispersants. They break oil up in some crazy chemical reaction and that gets rid of it. Physical methods are used if there’s a real mess out there. When that happens you have to clean the stuff up by hand...trust me, that’s not fun.

Did you know that there are some common household items that can be used to clean up an oil spill? Check it out!
